Mathematics

Maths– Intent

At BJR, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of learning in mathematics by developing confident, curious and resilient learners who demonstrate positive attitudes towards challenge. Through a carefully structured curriculum, we ensure all children develop strong foundations in mathematical knowledge and skills, enabling them to build upon knowledge as they progress.

Grounded in our Christian values of forgiveness, compassion and trust, our mathematics curriculum promotes perseverance, collaboration and respect. Children are encouraged to learn from mistakes, show compassion towards others and trust in their own ability to succeed. Mathematics learning is enriched through meaningful links to our faith and a strong connection with our community, ensuring relevance and purpose.

Using the White Rose Maths Scheme, we provide a coherent, mastery-based curriculum that enables all pupils to achieve depth of understanding and confidence in mathematics.

Maths – Implementation

Mathematics is taught daily using the White Rose Maths Scheme, ensuring clear progression and consistency across all year groups. Teaching is underpinned by Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, which support effective learning and long-term retention.

Teachers:

  • Begin lessons with review and retrieval of prior learning to strengthen connections
  • Model new learning explicitly, using clear explanations, worked examples and mathematical vocabulary
  • Break learning into small steps and scaffold understanding through guided practice
  • Use questioning strategically to check understanding and identify misconceptions early
  • Provide opportunities for independent practice, reasoning and problem-solving

Lessons include hands-on activities using concrete and pictorial resources to engage and enthuse children, ensuring learning is accessible to all. Teachers regularly adapt teaching in response to assessment, providing timely intervention, additional challenge or alternative representations where needed.

A key focus is placed on addressing misconceptions. Misunderstandings are anticipated through careful planning and tackled through targeted questioning, live marking, and responsive teaching, ensuring all pupils develop secure understanding before moving on.

Classroom environments promote confidence and trust, where mistakes are valued as learning opportunities, reflecting our commitment to forgiveness and compassion.

Maths - Impact

The impact of our mathematics curriculum is that pupils:

  • Develop secure mathematical understanding built on strong foundations
  • Show confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards mathematics
  • Can clearly explain their thinking, reason mathematically and solve problems
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge in a range of contexts
  • Make sustained progress over time and are well prepared for the next stage of learning

Children leave our school as confident mathematicians with a lifelong love of learning, equipped with the skills, knowledge and values needed to thrive as part of their community and beyond.
