Early Years

EYFS Curriculum Vision and Intent

In the Early Years and Foundation Stage, our vision is to provide a high-quality, nurturing, and inspiring start to every child’s educational journey. We aim to establish a strong foundation for both academic achievement and moral and spiritual growth, enabling children to thrive as confident, curious, and lifelong learners.

Our EYFS provision ensures that all children make strong progress from their individual starting points through child-led, purposeful play, high-quality teaching, and consistent assessment. Practice reflects the BJR teaching and learning approach, with a clear emphasis on early reading, communication, language, writing, and mathematics, ensuring every child develops the essential skills and knowledge to succeed.

We believe that play is central to all learning in EYFS. Through child-initiated exploration, children develop independence, creativity, and resilience. Strong, purposeful adult interactions extend learning, challenge thinking, and model language, while supporting the development of oracy skills—enabling children to communicate effectively, articulate ideas, collaborate, and problem-solve.

We foster the right learning habits through the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning: Play, Exploration, Active Learning, Creativity, and Critical Thinking. Our continuous provision is ambitious, inclusive, and responsive to children’s needs, offering rich, engaging, and meaningful experiences across indoor and outdoor environments. This is enhanced through trips, visits, and regular forest school sessions, which stimulate curiosity, wonder, and discovery.

At our school, EYFS is more than preparing children academically; it is about holistic development, ensuring children flourish socially, emotionally, morally, and spiritually. By combining high expectations, purposeful play, child-led exploration, and intentional adult support, we aim to ignite a lifelong passion for learning and growth, equipping children to become thoughtful, creative and engaged members of society.
