PSHE

PSHE Intent

At Bishop John Robinson, our PSHE curriculum aims to equip students with a profound understanding of their emotional wellbeing and physical health, preparing them to thrive as happy, productive members of society. We deliver this learning through Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, ensuring that teachers build robust academic foundations through interactive, hands-on activities designed to engage and inspire every child.

We want our children to always have high expectations of themselves in everything they do, foster a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In what can seem like a big scary world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their surroundings and that they learn how to respond to an array of situations, allowing them to take care of their mental health. The PSHE curriculum we have created, develops learning and understanding, which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be citizens of our ever-changing world and be happy, safe and confident in their future relationships, both professional and personal. Our curriculum promotes a positive attitude to children’s bodies, minds, emotions and relationships, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life and providing them with a life-long love of learning.

We are able to support our children through what can be challenging learning, using our My Happy Mind programme and Kapow. During these sessions, pupils and staff learn about their brain, how it functions, and how we can develop a better understanding of the complexity of our brains, thoughts and emotions. Our teachers use resources and learning aids backed by science, which allow for accurate and established teaching. When using Kapow in our lessons, teachers are able to help children develop their knowledge and skills as well as develop positive attitudes towards topics such as; valuing family structures, creating and maintaining positive friendships, developing safe and respectful relationships, understanding the changes that take place during puberty, promoting good health, learning to make independent choices and not be influenced by others, operating safely in a digital world.
