Science

 Intent

At Bishop John Robinson Primary School, our science curriculum is designed to inspire a life-long love of learning, curiosity and wonder about God’s world. Using the Developing Experts scheme of learning, we provide a carefully sequenced curriculum that ensures strong foundations in scientific knowledge and skills, allowing children to build upon knowledge progressively as they move through school.

We foster positive attitudes to science by delivering engaging, inclusive and hands-on activities that enthuse and motivate children, enabling them to explore, investigate and ask meaningful questions. Through practical enquiry and real-life contexts, pupils develop confidence in working scientifically and applying their understanding to the world around them.

Teaching is underpinned by Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, ensuring learning is broken into small steps, prior knowledge is revisited, vocabulary is explicitly taught and understanding is continually checked. This approach supports all learners to achieve success and deepen their understanding over time.

Science at Bishop John Robinson also nurtures faith, helping pupils to appreciate creation, develop awe and respect for the natural world, and recognise their responsibility to care for it. We aim to foster a strong connection with our community by linking scientific learning to local, national and global issues, encouraging pupils to see science as relevant, purposeful and impactful.

Ultimately, our intent is to develop knowledgeable, curious and confident scientists who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and who carry with them a positive relationship with learning that lasts a lifetime.
